About Steel Bicycles

Why use Steel in Custom Bicycle Frame Design?

Steel is extremely strong, comfortable, and provides superior fatigue resistance.

Types of Steel used in handcrafted bike frames:

Chromoloy Steel - Chromium-Molybdenum - high strength steel alloy (4130 ChroMoly). ChroMoly has excellent strength-to-weight ratio, is stronger and harder than standard steel.

True Temper Steel - Lightweight S3 is a Super Strength Steel that is an air hardening steel alloy. S3 bicycle frame tubing is extremely light weight but incredibly strong and is ideal in steel bike designs.

OX Platinum Steel Alloy - is a composition of Chromium-Molybdenum (Chromoloy) and Vanadium with increased tensile strength. This bicycle frame alloy gains additional strength through heat as a result of the welding or brazing process. OX Platinum Bike Steel is highly temper-resistant and can result in up to 10% increase in fatigue life and a 20% increase in yield strength while maintaining its ultra-lightweight properties.

True Temper Verus - steel bicycle tubing has superior stiffness and tensile strength (120 ksi). This results in a highly durable,  low-weight lively ride.

True Temper Verus HT - steel bike tubing is a Double Butted 4130 chromium molybdenum steel alloy with superior yield strength (175 ksi). Versus HT has incredible strength, hardness, and durability.

SUPERTHERM ™ is made from a "heat-loving" steel alloy which posseses a revolutionary strength of (217 ksi). Ultra-high strength and low weight provide the ultimate in speed and durability.

Columbus NIOBIUM - is a special micro-alloy steel with Manganese, Chrome, Molybdenum, Nickel & Niobium. This custom steel alloy provides increased yield strength, superior resistance to corrosion, lightness and reliability. Niobium steel alloy results in bicycle frames that are high in strength, hardness and a long fatigue life.

Columbus NIVACROM - is a highly weldable form of steel alloy for bicycle frames. The steel undergoes a variety of special processes and treatments which dramatically increases the bikes fatigue resistance.

Columbus Thermacrom - is a bicycle steel alloy that provides a weight similar to aluminum alloys with low maintenance, superior elastcity and stability. Bike frames can be built that provide excellent performance, very good rigidity and a comfortable ride.

Dedacciai Steel Tubing - Lombard steel tubing, ZERO REPLICA (Tempered Steel) and Series Zero One Replica (Non-Tempered Steel). Dedacciai's HSLA - High Strength Low Alloy Steel is a high tensile steel which offers superior strength and weldability. The special bicycle steel formula contains percentages of carbon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum and vanadium. Series Zero One replica is a chrome molybdenum (25CrMo4) seamless steel.

Magnese -  "Reynolds 531" ultra-light weight, extremely strong steel alloy. Because less  vibration is transferred through the bike frame, magnese / magnesium custom bicycle frames can provide a very smooth ride.

Specialty - "Reynolds 953" extremely strong, thin-walled tubing ideal for bike racing or sports bikes.

About Niobium Bike Frame Construction:

Nobium is nearly "indestructable".  Nobium steel bike frames have an extremely high stiffness to weight ratio and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) value. The UTS of Niobium steel may be considered better than titanium and aluminium alloys. Nobium steel is used to manufacture triple butted bike tubes that are extremely light and virtually indestructible.

About Lugged Steel Bike Frame Construction:

Lugged steel frame construction is a method of building custom made bicycles using high quality steel tubing and lugs which are the steel fittings that fit tightly over the ends of the bicycle tubing. These are normally "brazed" whereby the metals are heated to melting temperature for added strength.
